Board approves $498,000 contract to renovate auditorium after Garland roof assessment

The Allegheny-Clarion Valley School District board voted to award a $498,000 contract to Burns to renovate the high-school auditorium roof and begin associated renovation work.
The board’s discussion followed a presentation by Dan Becker of Garland, who described three options for the aging auditorium roof — a liquid-applied restoration, modern modified bitumen replacement and standing-seam metal — and recommended a modernized modified-bitumen system as the best mix of longevity, cost and performance. Becker told the board the modified bitumen option provides better lifecycle performance and, for this project, a low-VOC, hospital-grade adhesive option would minimize odor and allow work to proceed while students are in session.
"With the marginal increase of cost and the flexibility to confidently work while students are in the classrooms, I do recommend it in this case," Becker said.
After receiving bids, administrators recommended Burns as the general contractor; board members noted five qualified bidders responded to the solicitation and that some specialty trades (electrical, HVAC) will be rebid because those subpackages exceeded the initial budget. The motion to award Burns the contract carried by voice vote.
The board also approved a smaller facilities quote — replacement of two gate valves on the auditorium air handler for $5,390 — to reduce leaking risks during the renovation and to allow future isolation for repairs.
Next steps: administration will finalize the Burns contract, begin lead-time purchases (for example, auditorium seating), and return to the board with schedule and any rebid results for electrical and HVAC packages.
