Board holds first reading of policy updates including AI rules, attendance and purchasing threshold

Dr. Amidzic said many changes are housekeeping: transportation policies have been renumbered and consolidated without substantive change. Several policies add nondiscrimination language and specify who receives complaints. Attendance policy updates add reasons for excused absences, including playing taps at a funeral. Class-rank policy language was revised to reflect new law on automatic admission for the top 5% to the University of Wisconsin–Madison and clarifies how rank will be calculated.
The policy committee is also proposing to lower the contract amount threshold that triggers board approval from $150,000 to $100,000; Mitchell’s review suggested this would increase the number of contracts requiring board approval by fewer than 10, which the committee characterized as manageable. Finally, the draft artificial-intelligence policy retains beneficial uses but adds explicit prohibited uses of AI by students so teachers can reinforce academic expectations.
