Superintendent highlights mentoring need, announces homecoming parade and community events

The Battle Creek Public Schools superintendent used the Sept. 16 board meeting to promote mentoring and invite the public to fall community events.
The superintendent described a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Michigan and said more than 100 students are currently on a waiting list for mentors. “Our collective participation in this event brings attention to the importance of students having that one-on-one connection with another adult,” the superintendent said, and cited program statistics for local matches, including an asserted 91 percent improvement in academic performance after one year.
The superintendent also announced that the homecoming parade will return Friday, Sept. 27, starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by a community tailgate and picnic prior to the football game against Loy Norrix (referred to in the meeting as Lloyd North). Community members were invited to line downtown streets and participate in related activities.
In board member comments Trustee LaValley reported on the Central High School Career Academies retreat, noted that some students have enrolled in KCC’s regional manufacturing training center and promoted the Freshman Career Exploration Fair scheduled for Oct. 9. He also promoted local community fundraisers and a scholarship spaghetti dinner with ticketing and pickup details.
