Board approves $518,520 Calhoun County contract to cover six school nurses

The Battle Creek Public Schools Board of Education voted Sept. 16 to approve a contract with the Calhoun County Public Health Department for up to $518,520 to provide school nursing services for the 2024–25 school year.
Monique Cheeks of the Calhoun County Public Health Department told the board the School Wellness Program will provide nurses to cover elementary buildings, help with immunizations and train school emergency-response teams on CPR and use of defibrillators. “The contract for this current school year is for $518,520 to fulfill the remaining school nurse roles,” Cheeks said.
The superintendent’s office and Cheeks clarified staffing: the program will cover six nurses this year. Cheeks said the district currently has two district-employed nurses in place; Fremont and WK Kellogg Prep retain district nurses at the elementary and secondary levels respectively, and the county contract will pick up the additional sixth position after a retirement at Post Franklin. Cheeks said the county is in a second round of interviews for candidates and has one candidate under consideration who must complete another interview before a final recommendation.
A trustee motioned to approve the contract for up to $518,520 and the motion was seconded; the board chair called for a voice vote and the motion passed. Funding for the contract was described in the meeting as coming from a grant source (described in the meeting as “388 average grant”). The board did not record roll-call votes in the minutes beyond the voice approval.
The approval directs the district to finalize the contract with Calhoun County Public Health Department and move forward with county staffing and onboarding for the covered nurse positions.
