Greene County board approves SBRC requests totaling $443,573.82 for special education and LEP reimbursements

The Greene County Comm School District board voted to request two allowable-growth reimbursements from the state School Budget Review Committee on its regular meeting agenda. The board approved a request of $426,088.44 for the district’s 2023–24 special education deficit and a separate request of $17,485.38 for excess limited-English-proficiency (LEP) expenditures.

Superintendent (speaker 2) explained the special education request during new business, saying the allowable-growth process covers reimbursable expenses tied to services provided to students with special education needs and that those reimbursements are drawn from property-tax-funded reserves rather than the general fund. “These are, like, reimbursable expenses that come from salaries and services that are provided to students needing special education services,” the superintendent said.

On the LEP request, the superintendent told the board the district’s weighted funding claim had increased because of a higher number of students requiring English-language services. “We’re just making a request to the SBRC to be able to spend money that we have,” the superintendent said, noting the LEP figure was higher than the previous year.

Board member (speaker 1) moved both requests; each motion was seconded, and the board approved both by roll call. The meeting record shows the following votes on the special education motion: Boyd — Aye; Fields — Aye; Dominic — Aye; (presiding member) Rick Hagen — Aye; Silva — Aye. The LEP request carried by the same roll-call pattern.

Both requests will be filed with the SBRC for consideration; approval by that committee would allow the district to use allowable-growth revenue to cover the specified 2023–24 expenditures.
