Jackson County School District presents meal-price change, free/reduced updates and USDA rule impacts

School nutrition leadership told the board Heroes Elementary received a food-service permit and that the department is ready to begin deliveries and prepare meals for students there.
Miss Blake said the online free/reduced application went live July 8 and the district has processed more than 300 applications. She reminded families that approvals from last year continue through Sept. 12 and urged reapplication to avoid benefit disruption.
Miss Blake said the Georgia Department of Education will reimburse school food authorities for the remaining cost of reduced-price breakfast and lunches this school year (the amounts mentioned were 30¢ for breakfast and 40¢ for lunch), replacing costs not covered by federal reimbursement.
She also told the board the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s final rule released in April will change sodium and sugar requirements over the next five years and gives districts more flexibility in breakfast-service models. The nutrition director said the department will introduce a sausage-egg-cheese breakfast scramble on Aug. 5 as a higher-protein option.
Because meal prices have not changed since 2014, Miss Blake presented a board item proposing modest price adjustments for the 2024–25 school year; the board was asked to consider approval on the consent/board agenda later in the meeting.
