School resource officer James Russo receives C.A.R.E.S. Award at Sarasota County meeting

Officer James Russo, a school resource officer at Triad, said he was surprised to learn during a Sarasota County School Board meeting that he had won the C.A.R.E.S. Award.

"So today I was, told we were having a meeting to go over second quarter standards with our students...and in actuality, it ended up being I won the C.A.R.E.S. Award," Officer James Russo said.

The award recognizes district staff who "embody the caring nature for our students and staff," a presenter said, praising Russo’s day-to-day interactions. "James goes above and beyond every day for the students at Triad, embodying the spirit of service and leadership that this award celebrates," the presenter said.

Another presenter described the criteria and Russo’s work in practical terms, saying he "makes sure that our staff feels safe," is "always out on campus checking doors," and "works very closely with our campus monitor." The presenter added, "He just epitomizes what an SRO is and should be for the Sarasota County School Board."

Russo told the meeting he enjoys working with students and that serving as an SRO was the reason he entered law enforcement. Staff and presenters closed by saying his "dedication, compassion, and proactive leadership make a lasting positive difference for the Triad students and for our families every single day."

The meeting proceeded after the presentation; no formal vote or policy action accompanied the award announcement.
