Brown County to play football independently next season, board told

Mark Bruner presented a district athletics update and told the Brown County School Corporation board that, after several nearby schools adjusted conference affiliations, the district plans for Brown County to play football as an independent beginning next season and to schedule with Mid‑Hoosier Conference schools.

"So we've decided best thing for Brown County would be to go independent in football only," Bruner said, explaining the decision follows departures and size mismatches that led to repeated lopsided scores. He said the move is intended to create a more competitive schedule and improve student morale and safety; Bruner cited concerns about blowout games and injuries.

Bruner said the planned football‑only schedule would include teams such as Milan, North Decatur, Oldenburg and Switzerland County, and that the football season window would run roughly from August to mid‑October. He told trustees the district will continue other sports in the Western Indiana Conference for now, because those sports are more balanced across current conference opponents.

Board members asked about travel distances (Bruner said Switzerland County would be the longest trip) and whether the change requires conference votes; Bruner explained conference constitutions govern participation and that a two‑thirds vote of conference schools had allowed special arrangements for football‑only participation in the past.

What happens next: the athletics office will finalize schedules and monitor how the football‑only approach fits the district; trustees said they will review the approach annually.
