Staff member explained the district has reached a tentative agreement for the 2024-25 school year, posted publicly on Oct. 15, 2024, that centers on teacher compensation. "The first thing that we wanted to work relentlessly on was teacher compensation," the staff member said, describing a plan to move every returning teacher at least one step on the salary scale and to provide a minimum $5,000 increase for each teacher while avoiding increases that would exceed certain internal thresholds.
The proposal includes targeted "catch-up" adjustments to honor years of professional service for educators who had been frozen on the scale: staff reported a graduated correction in which teachers three levels behind could take an additional step, those four years behind two steps, five years behind three steps, and six or more years behind four steps. "So we had to make sure that we gave that person more or $5,000 at least," the staff member said.
The presentation listed numerical salary points the district will use under the tentative contract: a stated new starting salary of 47.05 and a master-scale top of 80,500. The agreement also sets the corporation share of health insurance premiums at 80% and the employee share at 20% across all but one plan (a high-deductible plan adjusted to meet federal minimums). Parental leave was increased from 15 to 20 paid days, and association leave days increased from 10 to 15.
The tentative agreement also updates extracurricular compensation: the district added stipends for activities including a Dungeons and Dragons club, game club, high-school testing coordinator, show choir and summer band, and increased the overall ECA schedule by 3%. A representative of the Brown County Educators Association addressed the board during recognition and said the association appreciates the negotiation work and is "really excited" about the agreement.
The board did not take a final vote on the contract in this session; the staff member framed the presentation as a public review of the tentative agreement and thanked association co-presidents for their participation in negotiations. The next procedural steps and any final ratification timeline were not specified in the record.
