Board hears Carmel Parks master-plan highlights and partnership opportunities with schools

The plan calls for acquiring additional parks, greenways and natural areas—particularly on the city’s west side—and increased river access and environmental-education opportunities along the White River.
Browning highlighted that Carmel Clay Schools is a major landowner in the city and said coordination between the schools and the parks district would help implement green-space and trail projects. She said the parks district reported an 84% cost-recovery rate (compared with a 25% national average for parks and recreation) and that community requests included more nature parks, multiuse trails and canoe/kayak launch and rental opportunities.
The parks master plan will be presented to the parks board for consideration and vote; Browning suggested continued collaboration between the city, parks district and the schools on shared-use plans and long-term funding strategies.
