Kirsten Kowalewski, a Carmel parent, told the school board her 17-year-old Carmel High School daughter was repeatedly misgendered while participating in a required practicum and has declined to return after multiple incidents. "She has come home crying about it," Kowalewski said during public comment, describing attempts to resolve the problem directly with a practicum director that she said had no sustained effect.
Kowalewski said the situation is not limited to transgender students and described misgendering as an issue of basic respect. She asked the board to provide education for children, teachers and staff about names and identities and to include training that fosters respect for all students.
President Cocay reminded the meeting that public-comment rules prevent the board from responding during the comment period and that speakers’ remarks are taken under advisement. The board did not take immediate action during the meeting; Kowalewski’s request will be recorded and considered during subsequent administrative follow-up.
