Board approves teacher appreciation grant policy and evaluation rubric

Blue River Valley Schools’ board approved changes to teacher-related policies and handbooks, including adoption of policy D250 governing the teacher appreciation grant and updates to the teacher evaluation and peer assistance handbook.
Superintendent Dickerson said D250 will replace older, conflicting language in the teacher handbook after the district completes an audit of policies. The board voted to suspend the rules and pass D250 on first reading.
Separately, the board approved a revised evaluation model and the peer assistance and review handbook. Dickerson and staff described the main substantive change as the addition of a core professionalism rubric; under the rubric, deficiencies in attendance, punctuality, adherence to procedures or respectful behavior could result in a deduction of up to one point on a teacher’s summative evaluation, but the handbook requires documentation and provides a checklist so deductions are not a surprise to teachers.
Board members said the rubric was developed with the CTA (the local union) and the administrative team and approved by the board following discussion and a motion to adopt the evaluation model. Members signaled approval by voice vote.
The policies and handbook updates will be posted online once finalized and will be used in annual evaluation cycles going forward.
