The Wabash City Schools Board of Trustees on Aug. 5 approved a set of policy and operational items intended to align procedures and address enrollment and fund health.
The board approved the 2024–25 support personnel handbook, which board members said includes process and procedural changes and removes previously listed annual pay increases; the district indicated pay increases for classified staff will be considered each January as funds allow.
Administrators also presented and the board adopted a Wabash High School course repeat policy describing how retaken coursework appears on transcripts. The policy clarifies that under recent Department of Education guidance all grades must remain on the transcript, so the district cannot "replace" earlier grades; instead some courses may be excluded from GPA calculations while remaining on the transcript. The district said credit may be removed for GPA purposes, but the original grade will remain as part of the record.
Because kindergarten enrollment declined to 89 students (about 30–31 in DLI classes), the board approved reducing kindergarten sections for 2024–25 and adding a pre‑K section to serve four waiting 4‑year‑olds. Administrators said the changes allow reasonable class sizes and will reassign a teacher who had moved from pre‑K to kindergarten back to a 4‑year‑old class.
On child nutrition, the board approved increasing the adult breakfast price from $2.75 to $2.85 effective Aug. 7, 2024, citing a state recommendation. Separately, the board approved moving Megan Harrell from hourly to a salaried role at $32,000 effective Aug. 5, 2024, to prepare her to take over cafeteria manager responsibilities; administrators said the cafeteria fund had been negative in prior months but recent changes in pricing and staffing have improved its outlook.
Board members voted to approve the items by voice vote and asked staff to monitor enrollment and cafeteria fund performance, with updates expected at future meetings.
