Board adopts updated iPad policy with new consequences, training plan

At its June meeting the board approved a second reading of the district’s iPad policy, which adds a clarified consequence table for lost, damaged or misused devices, clarifies parent responsibilities and calls for digital-citizenship instruction at all grade levels.
"We're going to come up with a digital citizenship course at the beginning of the year for all grade levels," Jenny Soskie, the district technology lead, said, describing plans for Canvas modules and short assessments embedded in video content to ensure students and staff understand policy expectations.
Soskie told the board the district will stop charging families directly for devices (they will be provided free of charge) and emphasized implementation and follow-through are the critical pieces: "One of the challenges will be follow through and then the reporting. And then there's a lot of responsibility that's going to fall on classroom teachers."
Trustees voted to adopt the policy after the second reading; administrators said they will create lessons and parent-facing materials before school starts and will monitor application of the consequences table closely in the first months of the school year.
The motion to approve the second reading carried and the new policy will be included in student handbooks and posted for parents and staff.
