The Penn-Harris-Madison board on May 19 unanimously approved a resolution authorizing Schmucker Middle School to apply for the Indiana Department of Education’s Purple Star School designation, a recognition for schools that demonstrate a commitment to supporting military-connected students and families.
Schmucker representatives described the school’s longstanding Veterans Day program and named Mary DeKeever as the faculty point of contact for the Purple Star application. The resolution was presented by a district administrator and moved and approved by the board without opposition.
Why it matters: The Purple Star designation is intended to recognize and strengthen supports for military families. Board approval of the resolution allows Schmucker to include formal board acknowledgement in its application to the Indiana Department of Education.
Next steps: Schmucker staff will proceed with the application process using the board resolution as part of the package to the IDOE.
