The board approved the 2024–25 classified rate schedule, a package of adjustments the superintendent said are intended to align long-standing practice with the formal pay schedule and make the district more competitive for bus drivers.
Key changes include adding food-service positions to the classified schedule, equalizing pay for a courier position split across operations and food-service funds, giving several custodians a small lead-pay increase for summer team-lead duties, and converting a transportation assistant role into a part-time transportation secretary. The superintendent said these changes also help the district meet auditors' expectations for a single, consistent pay schedule.
The biggest change involves bus-driver compensation. After reviewing survey data and route-hour variations, the superintendent described a sliding approach that results in driver pay ranging roughly from $33.65 an hour to $40.00 an hour depending on route duration and duties; midday routes were moved to the same hourly rate as AM/PM routes in many cases. Substitute pay will increase from $84 to $87 a day. The superintendent said the goal is to reduce turnover and fill routes so students can be transported consistently.
Board members asked about cost implications and the superintendent said overall cost increases were modest and that some drivers' annual totals will go up while others go down depending on route restructuring. The board approved the schedule in a 7–0 vote.
Next steps: the schedule will be implemented for the 2024–25 school year and the superintendent said classified pay for other roles may be revisited later in the fall.
