MSD Lawrence Township reports 95% graduation rate; honors diplomas rising

A district presenter (speaker 1) told the MSD Lawrence Township board that the district’s graduation rate stood at 95 percent as of Oct. 1, marking the second consecutive year at that level.
The presenter broke out diploma and subgroup figures: 7 percent of graduates received a general diploma, 60 percent a Core 40 diploma and 34 percent an honors diploma in the most recent reporting. He said Black students graduated at a 95 percent rate and saw the largest increase in honors diplomas (up 15 percentage points), Hispanic students had a 92 percent graduation rate (with honors diplomas up 3 points), White students had a 97 percent graduation rate (and a 4 point honors increase), and multiracial students had a 93 percent graduation rate.
The presenter cautioned the board that percentages for small subgroups can be volatile and that changes in state diploma requirements were under review; he said the state was considering new diploma types and honor seals and the district would continue to monitor the state's draft proposals.
Board members praised staff and noted the district’s long‑term improvement: the presenter showed a 12‑year trend with an 8 percentage‑point increase in the overall graduation rate and a 12 percentage‑point increase in Core 40 diplomas.
What’s next: The district will continue monitoring state diploma proposals and pursue strategies to increase honors diploma attainment and close subgroup gaps.
