The MSD Lawrence Township board approved three routine but time‑sensitive items at its meeting: submission of an application for the common school loan, disposal of a school bus that is beyond repair and permission to advertise E‑Rate RFPs to update district networking infrastructure.
Mr. Miles, speaking during the information portion of the meeting, said the common school loan would provide "about $1,600,000" to purchase student technology and described it as a low‑interest option the district uses when the state opens the window. "It's a 1% loan," he added when asked about the rate.
Later in the meeting the board moved, seconded and approved the application for the common school loan by voice vote. The board also approved Mr. Miles’s recommendation to dispose of a bus that was declared unrepairable; Miles said the vehicle's value was now primarily scrap. In a separate voice vote the board authorized Dr. Gadlin to advertise E‑Rate RFPs for wide‑area connections, a data‑center link and switches, noting E‑Rate can reimburse roughly 90% of eligible costs and that many existing leased circuits are nearing 20‑year contract terms.
All three motions were approved by voice vote with "ayes" recorded; no roll‑call tallies were specified in the meeting record.
What this means: If the loan application is approved by the state the district could use the funds to purchase devices and related student technology. The E‑Rate authorization begins a procurement process that the district said is intended to bring multiple vendors forward so it can select competitive bids.
