Pike Transportation reports 100% fleet readiness, rising ridership and extensive training programs

David Holly, speaking for the Pike Transportation Department, told the board on Feb. 13 that the department is operating 90 routes under a three-tier routing model and transports 8,851 students this school year.
Holly said the routes amount to about 7,108 bus stops every school day and roughly 6,970 miles driven districtwide each day, which he said totals more than 1.2 million miles annually. "Our buses are averaging about 13 to 14 stops each run," he said, explaining how daily stops accumulate across the fleet.
Holly reported a fleet of 144 buses and said the department currently employs 98 drivers, 44 monitors, seven diesel mechanics and seven office support staff. He described in-house training including an eight-week Pike CDL training program (15 people trained since 2022), Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) trainer certification completed by one of the district’s drivers, and Stop-the-Bleed training supported by the district wellness department.
On vehicle safety, Holly said the district received a 100% fleet-readiness sticker from the 2024 Indiana State Police bus inspection and has achieved at least 98% fleet readiness over the last three years.
Board reaction was strongly positive: members applauded the safety rating and thanked transportation staff for their work and dedication.
