HDC asks 34 Main Street applicant to soften sign design, continue for revisions

An applicant representing a new second‑floor hair salon at 34 Main Street presented a proposed recessed‑letter flat wall sign and was asked by the Historic Districts Commission on Feb. 4 to revise the design to better fit the building’s established storefront character.
Presenter Yusong said the applicant can provide a darker background, adjust corners, and tune letter treatments. Commissioners praised the font’s compatibility with the Grasshopper shop but recommended softer shapes—clipped corners or an oval—and a darker background (deep green or black) to reduce visual contrast with adjacent signage. “If that sign had a similar shape to the vessel jeweler sign with the corners looking like that, it would be more consistent for the building,” one commissioner said.
The commission voted to continue the application so the applicant can refine the shape, background color, and other design details and return with revised drawings and manufacturer samples. Staff said administrative approval could be considered for small changes, but the commission preferred a formal continuance for the current set of modifications.
Next steps: applicant to submit revised designs and samples for the next meeting on Feb. 25.
