Brookline School Committee approves $20,000 one-time early retirement incentive for Unit A

The Brookline School Committee voted Jan. 8 to approve a one-time early retirement incentive of $20,000 per person for members of Unit A as part of FY27 budget planning.
Superintendent Wong presented the proposal, saying the incentive is intended to create some salary-differential savings over time and to reduce the need for staff reductions elsewhere. Wong characterized the payment as "one time" and said it would be made in the employee’s final paycheck and would be conditioned on actual retirement.
Committee members asked about likely uptake and net savings. Wong estimated a conservative uptake of roughly 5 people, possibly up to 10, and said savings would be modest and would not close the whole budget gap. Committee discussion noted scenarios where replacement-hire salaries and other variables could affect net savings. Committee members stressed that the incentive is tailored to this fiscal-year planning process and would not necessarily recur annually.
A motion to approve the superintendent’s request was moved by the chair, seconded by Jesse, and approved by roll call. The committee’s recorded roll call showed the motion carried; committee members present voted in favor.
Other business at the meeting included subcommittee reports and a motion to enter executive session to discuss collective bargaining and litigation, which also passed in roll call. The committee did not return to open session.
