Saint Charles Parish School Board honors first African American graduates of district

The Saint Charles Parish School Board on March 26 unanimously adopted a resolution honoring Norbert Green and Alvin Pierre as part of the first class of African American students to complete a 12th‑grade education in the district, moving to recognize their historical role and perseverance.

Board member Mister Alexander read the resolution, recounting that, in the late 1940s and by 1952, local Black schools had expanded beyond eighth grade so a first graduating class could complete grade 12. "This resolution is in recognition of honoring the first African American graduates of Saint Charles Parish Public Schools," Alexander said as he presented the text and moved adoption; the motion carried unanimously.

After the vote, the board invited the honorees forward to receive the framed resolution. Norbert Green said, "Saint Charles Parish did it for us, and we are proud to." Alvin Pierre thanked the board and added, "It's an honor to be with members as a part of history of Saint Charles Parish. I thank all of you that so honored us, and may God bless you." Board members and the superintendent offered congratulations and photos were taken.

The resolution directs that copies be presented to Mr. Green and Mr. Pierre and recorded in the official minutes of the March 26, 2025 School Board meeting. The board recorded the action as adopted without dissent. The recognition highlights a historical expansion of local schooling and the district's effort to mark that local milestone.

The board moved on to other agenda items following the recognition.
