Committee forwards cameras-in-classroom amendment amid funding questions

The Orleans Parish School Board Policy Committee on Dec. 16, 2025 voted to send an amendment on cameras in special education classrooms (item 3.8) to the full board after members questioned whether the statutory change included funding for equipment and installation.
Several members raised the issue of an unfunded mandate and asked whether appropriations accompanied the legislative change. One member said there had been a demand that "you can't have everybody do this and not pay for it," and that funds had reportedly been allocated. When the committee returned to the cameras discussion, a committee member clarified that "the legislature did not provide in the actual amendment for funding. However, it is our understanding that the Department of Ed has provided for some funding for that," and said work to ensure cameras are installed is underway and expected to meet the deadline.
Committee members asked staff and government relations to provide further clarification; the motion to move the amendment to the full board carried by voice vote. The committee recorded that funding details would be clarified when the relevant member returned and that staff (and the Department of Education) were coordinating installations.
The amendment will be considered by the full board; the committee requested staff to confirm the precise funding sources and installation timeline.
