Superintendent John Bartholomew urges Assumption Parish voters to renew three school millages

Superintendent Dr. John Bartholomew urged Assumption Parish voters to approve renewal of three local school millages on Dec. 7, saying the measures are continuations of existing levies that fund day-to-day operations for the district.

Bartholomew and a district presenter said the three renewals—a 6.1-mill, a 20.8-mill and a 6.97-mill assessment—are not new taxes and would not raise millage rates. "A vote yes is a vote for a better future in Assumption Parish," Bartholomew said, urging turnout on Election Day and during early voting.

The district said the three renewals together account for nearly $7,800,000 of the school system's budget, describing that sum as almost half of the local dollars the district collects for daily operations. Those funds, the presenter said, support salaries and benefits for about 450 employees and underwrite recruiting, retention and professional training for certified teachers and support staff.

Officials also outlined uses for facility and operations money, saying dedicated millage revenue pays for routine maintenance (lighting, roofing, plumbing and structural repairs) and enables improvements such as better air conditioning, security upgrades and classroom technology. The presenter said the funds also support construction and renovation projects, including classroom renovations, upgraded common areas and more modernized sports facilities.

The district provided voting details: early voting runs Nov. 22–30, and Election Day is Dec. 7. The statement urged voters to approve the three renewals to preserve the district's operational funding.
