District approves interim athletic-trainer agreement with Family Rehab Care; board urges long-term plan

The Taylor School District board on Aug. 7 approved an agreement with Family Rehab Care to provide athletic training, rehabilitation and wellness services for district teams.
Athletics staff said hiring full-time trainers has become difficult and described the contract as a stopgap that guarantees a trainer at every home game and provides students with access to the provider’s clinic (free services between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.). The agreement was presented with an hourly rate of $45; staff said a future full-time hire would likely cost more but could be justified in the athletic budget after additional analysis.
"The pros is that we’ll have a guaranteed trainer at every home game," athletics staff said. "If he’s able to find these new people rolling, we'll have someone full time. Negative, it's not where we want to be."
Board members and staff acknowledged liability and coverage concerns and urged pursuing a long-term plan that could include bargaining with unions and creating a district position if feasible.
