District superintendent highlights Friends of the Rouge plantings, invites board to start‑of‑year event

Superintendent Bob told the South Redford Board of Education that members of the Friends of the Rouge project and district staff have completed plantings at Adams and Thurston High School intended to beautify campus grounds and reduce students’ exposure to pollution.
“Many thanks to our very own science teacher from Pierce Middle School, Mr. Josh Crawford, who was the champion on behalf of the South Redford School District,” Bob said, and he singled out operations staff John Dunn and Mark Taylor for support in staging and watering the installations amid recent high heat.
Bob said the plantings are in the ground and will be followed by a second phase that involves students directly: “Several students will have the opportunity to also partake in some of the plantings over at Adams as well as Thurston, when we get closer to the mid portion of the fall.”
The superintendent also invited trustees to the district’s opening‑of‑the‑24/25 school year event at Dr. Weber Auditorium at 8 a.m. the following day, where he, Assistant Superintendent Kinsey, Board President (Chair) and the SREA president Bill Dyer will welcome staff back.
Why it matters: District plantings can improve school grounds and, when paired with student engagement, create hands‑on learning opportunities while addressing localized air‑quality concerns. The board was given a short notice update and an invitation to observe the event.
