Board discusses Title IX policy updates required by federal guidance; action expected next meeting

Superintendent Mark and Brad briefed the Portage Public Schools Board of Education on required updates to the district's Title IX policies following recent federal guidance. Mark said the district "falls under two different Title IX policies and guidelines" and that the district must maintain both policy versions — one for incidents that occurred before Aug. 1 and another for incidents after that date — so it can follow the correct procedures if challenged.
Mark said legal counsel advised keeping both policies in place and that the marked-up copies were included in the meeting packet. Brad, who the superintendent identified as the district's compliance officer for Title IX, said the policy changes carry significant training and procedural components the district will begin implementing as staff return to school.
Board members discussed the matter and were told the policies would be returned as action items at the next meeting; Mark said there was no urgency to act at this session and invited trustees to contact him or Brad with interpretation questions.
