Change order 8, she said, involved moving funds from contingency into construction budgets: Central Elementary’s change order 8 amounted to $107,292 and Haverhill’s change order 8 totaled $87,012.
She walked trustees through higher-cost items that contributed to the Central total: new raw cold-water piping to exterior hose bibs ($35,218), mechanical adjustments to avoid a structural pier ($13,628), and bulletin-driven waste piping and door revisions ($14,684). She also cited allowances for solid-surface tops and vanities ($26,825) and a fencing balance allowance ($44,978) that factored into site finishes.
For Haverhill, Anastasia said contractors added a concrete cap detail for underground electrical services (an owner-side scope shift) that added $24,853, a building domestic water backflow preventer required by the building inspector ($7,037), and $28,000 in playground equipment changes to bring equipment to the original design intent.
Anastasia cautioned that a few more change orders were likely as the projects “button up little loose ends” in the coming quarter, but she said the district still had substantial contingency on the overall program.
Why it matters: The change orders are part of the normal course of construction but include nontrivial line items that shift money from contingency into construction work. Trustees heard specifics that clarify why the increases occurred and where the money was allocated.
What’s next: Project staff said they expect a small number of additional change orders as projects close out and will return with details as they arise; no additional board action was taken on these specific change orders at the meeting.
