PCCS highlights $200,000 state grant, National Merit finalists and Bosch partnership

Frank, a district communications lead, updated the Parent Council on March 1 about recent recognitions, partnerships and a state grant that will fund teacher professional development.

Frank said the district received a $200,000 grant from the state of Michigan to support place-based social-studies professional learning for teachers. "We received a $200,000 state of Michigan grant, to give our teachers a chance to experience a place-based professional learning," he said, and described visits to museums, religious and cultural institutions in the Detroit area that teachers will use to inform classroom lessons.

Frank also highlighted student achievements: he said the district had 22 National Merit finalists this year, a high number in recent memory, and mentioned students whose essays were published in the New York Times.

On partnerships and facilities, Frank described a new collaboration with Bosch Corporation that placed two Bosch engineers into every fifth-grade innovation classroom across the district to support project-based and LEGO-kit work. He said the district is building an Innovation Hub tied to robotics and technology instruction, and plans for the facility to be open to the public for collaborative work on weekends.

Frank additionally noted recent bond-funded facility improvements — new gyms, an updated pool and an Innovation Hub under construction — and invited parents to the bond tour on April 24 to see project progress and hear from construction managers.
