Ovid‑Elsie students win state honors; board hears end-of-year highlights and graduation plans

The Ovid‑Elsie Area Schools board heard a string of end-of-year reports highlighting student achievements and program growth across the district.
Tracy Hopkins, the FFA chapter leader and ag science teacher, introduced three students — Gavin Glantz, Clay Powell and Joshua Miller — who advanced through district and regional competitions to state finals. Hopkins and the students described their preparation and noted one team reached the state final stage. "They were the regional winner, so that advanced them directly to the state finals," Hopkins said.
One student said their presentation topic was maple syrup production, explaining a family connection to the subject. The high school also reported growth in band numbers, hosted the MMAC honors band, and noted a strong performance by the chess team at the state tournament.
Administrators said the district’s "learning spot" program has helped attendance — reporting a roughly 14% attendance improvement compared with the previous year — and detailed community partnerships such as practice support from the LC Lions Club for student presentations.
Graduation was announced for Thursday, May 23 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium; administrators reported 11 in-person graduates and three online graduates.
Board members received the reports; no board action was required for the student highlights.
