Administration said the step-matching authority is intended to help recruit highly qualified candidates who would otherwise lose years of retirement/step credit by moving to a district that limits new hires to a lower step. The superintendent noted prior informal practices had sometimes placed experienced hires at higher steps without formal board sign-off; the resolution formalizes a process and requires the superintendent to report any letters to the board at the next regular meeting.
Board members debated the phrasing: one motion would have said "one step above limitations," but the board amended the language to allow matching a candidate’s current step so that an incoming teacher would not be penalized for prior experience elsewhere. The amended resolution includes a sunset date: the authority expires on 2025-01-30 unless the board extends it.
The board adopted the resolution after a motion and voice vote. Administration said each letter of agreement will be brought to the board at the next regular meeting in written form.
Implementation: the superintendent’s office will use the authority only when necessary to secure a candidate whose step in another district would otherwise make recruitment unlikely; such letters will be reported to the board.
