The Grant Public Schools board approved several student-focused items: a new high-school advisory class, a reinstated community-service graduation requirement beginning with freshmen, and updated student handbooks for both middle and high schools.
Administration described the advisory class as earmarked days for test makeups, SEL lessons (Mondays), instruction on executive-function skills, and time for students to catch up and build relationships with teachers. The board approved the advisory class by motion.
The community-service requirement will begin with this year's freshmen: students will be required to complete eight hours per year (two hours per marking period). "It encourages our kids to get out there and then volunteer, spend time in our community with our community members," Mr. Aiken said. Administration said students will be responsible for finding placements, with school staff available to help arrange opportunities.
Trustees also approved changes to the middle- and high-school handbooks after discussing enforcement of items such as the dress code. The changes were presented as reviewed by building administrators and coaches; the board asked for consistent enforcement.
