Staff said changes in state science standards and the availability of more elective options have altered students’ course choices and that some students who initially signed up completed summer coursework and later withdrew. Board members asked whether the program could be regionalized so that students from neighboring districts could participate and whether local health-care partners could help subsidize costs.
District staff described steps already under way, including outreach to private and charter schools and work toward Career and Technical Education (CTE) certification that could return some state funding after a final audit. Staff also cited an advisory committee that includes local health-care representatives as a vehicle to broaden recruitment and industry connections.
Board members asked for details about program requirements. Staff said students complete two ride-alongs (estimated at about eight hours each) and that the course includes a mental-health component and debriefing after ride-alongs.
After the discussion the board took a roll-call vote and the motion passed. The contract will fund the EMT course co-teaching arrangement for the upcoming school year; no amendment items were recorded at the time of the vote.
The district’s purchase order lists Life EMS Ambulance of Grand Rapids as the vendor and the price as $33,951.89. The board did not specify an implementation timeline beyond the standard start of the 2024–25 school year.
