Sarah Becker of the Chronicle opened a student showcase and described three pieces the students would share at the board meeting. "I am Sarah Becker of the Chronicle of these wonderful students," she said, introducing the presentations and thanking staff for their time.
Lakeland staff reported results from a phonics screener administered to all fourth‑grade students across the school's pods. A presenter said the winter screener showed 29% proficiency in phonics skills, 23% partially proficient and 48% not proficient. After an eight‑week intervention (about half an hour a day, staffed by roughly 7.3 teachers plus two interventionists and SEL support), staff reported an increase from 29% proficiency to 37% on the follow‑up assessment.
Teachers described where growth occurred and what remains a challenge: staff said students were most proficient on one of the measured phonics areas (about 84% proficient on that subskill) while other phonics categories, including certain consonant blends and long‑vowel patterns, lagged behind. Presenters credited focused small‑group instruction, additional purchased resources, and time spent by fourth‑grade teachers during intervention blocks for the gains.
The presentation concluded with staff inviting questions; board members thanked the presenters and noted the progress. The board did not take formal action on the presentation but proceeded with the agenda.
The display and data were presented by school staff during the board's building reports and presentations segment of the meeting; no independent assessment documents were attached to the transcript record.
