Superintendent praises staff response to Eagle Lake fire; district to host Oct. 14 Parent University on ALICE

The superintendent briefed the board on a recent fire at Eagle Lake, described the staff response as effective, and announced a Parent University on Oct. 14 focused on ALICE safety procedures.

Reporting on the incident, the superintendent said district staff and the safety team followed the established reunification and safety procedures. “It could not have gone better if you're going to have a fire,” the superintendent said, praising Mr. Melander and school food-service staff for their roles in managing the response and caring for students.

The superintendent said the event provided an opportunity to debrief and identify minor improvements — including suggested additions to go bags to keep students occupied during reunification — and that the safety team will incorporate lessons learned. An outside safety assessment by SCC is scheduled in October to identify any deficiencies and inform the district’s plan for addressing them.

To involve families, the district will host its first Parent University on Oct. 14, which will include a presentation on ALICE procedures so parents can understand the drills before students participate. The superintendent said staff were trained in ALICE before school started and that the parent session is meant to allow questions and context for families. Sign-ups will be used to determine the venue size.

The superintendent also said the district practiced reunification during the incident and that transportation staff and other employees responded quickly to support students. No audience comments or public testimony on the incident were recorded during the meeting.

The board did not take formal action on the incident report; next steps include reviewing the outside safety assessment results and sharing communications about Parent University logistics with families.
