The Laurel Public Schools Board of Trustees voted to appoint Kelly Anderson to a currently vacant trustee seat after interviewing two candidates.
Trustees asked each candidate about strengths, availability and what they would contribute to the board. Kelly Anderson emphasized experience in administration and a focus on communication and school climate. "Overall, I feel like the board is very healthy," Anderson said, adding she would bring a focus on communication and relationships across the district.
Several trustees said they preferred a candidate with recent administrative experience; Chris (speaker 7) moved to appoint Kelly Anderson and Jenny (speaker 11) seconded. The motion carried with the board voting in favor. Chair said, per procedure, the appointee would be sworn in at a subsequent meeting and staff would complete onboarding steps.
Trustees thanked both candidates for applying and encouraged the other candidate to consider running for an open seat in May; filling the appointment leaves open regular filing deadlines for those seats. The chair thanked members for a constructive process and indicated the board will follow up with the new appointee about the swearing-in timetable.
