Elementary leadership and targeted literacy programs highlighted in REAMS presentation

The REAMS principal presented the schools student-leadership and instructional supports to the board, describing how older students help younger learners through Letter Leaders and Math Masters and how those activities are tied to the buildings SIP goals.

Teacher Rachel Yacish, who led the classroom program, described the structure and expectations: students applied, practiced leadership and supported kindergarteners in short rotations of targeted activities. "We don't waste learning time," Yacish said, explaining 5-to-7-minute rotations that focus on fluency and foundational skills.

The principal summarized three SIP goals focused on standards and learning targets, student connectedness (MySavers survey administered in grades 3-4), and individualized teacher QCOMP goals tied to FAST assessment growth. Staff reported using curriculum maps, monthly literacy meetings and fidelity checks for tools such as IXL; teachers reserve 30-45 minutes a week for IXL practice on student Chromebooks.

Why it matters: The presentation linked small, daily instructional practices to larger goals for reading and math gains. Board members pressed for examples and asked to see curriculum-map templates at a future meeting.

Student recognition: The meeting included a Rocket Spotlight award honoring Erica Gable for contributions to special education and IEP work; multiple students were invited to receive certificates and briefly described the program.
