Board hears tribal-council request for more information on lowering compulsory attendance age to 16

A district representative told the board the tribal council asked the district to consider changing the compulsory attendance age from 18 to 16 and requested additional information and surveys before taking action.
"We asked to change the compulsory ... age from 18 to 16," the district speaker said, explaining the proposed change was intended "to provide some flexibility for some of our kids that need that flexibility." The representative said the tribal council had initially signaled approval but later requested more information and a set of surveys; the district sent a staff survey the morning of the meeting and planned to collect parent responses during parent–teacher conferences. A follow-up tribal-council meeting was scheduled for Feb. 27 to review the survey results.
Board members asked for clarification about next steps; the district said staff would compile survey results and return with more information for the tribal council and the board. No formal policy change was adopted at the meeting; the item remains at the information-and-follow-up stage.
