Public commenter urges leadership accountability; board discusses reinstating standing committees and retreat items

During the added public forum, Regina Brooks identified herself as an educator with more than 25 years in Weldon and urged district leadership to show improved performance. “Show me you can be the best superintendent until December,” Brooks said, and added she would hold leaders accountable if progress is not evident.
Board members acknowledged the comment and then discussed several items slated for a retreat that were brought forward into the open meeting: protocol, accountability and the reinstatement of standing committees. Counsel (Attorney Weber) reviewed the board’s existing NCSBA policy for standing committees (policy 2230) and explained the chairperson’s role in naming committee chairs and members and publishing assignments annually. Board members discussed whether to add committees now or defer to a future meeting when the board chair makes the annual committee assignments.
No formal vote was taken on committee assignments at the meeting; board counsel said adding or changing standing committees would follow the usual policy processes and could be placed on a future agenda for formal action.
