Board highlights student honors and community donations, including Subaru gift to Central Middle

At the start of the Sept. 1 meeting, Surry County Schools recognized students and community partners.
A staff presenter noted two local students — Walker York (accepted to North Carolina Governor's School for Choral Music) and Cassie Mills (accepted to the Governor's School for Theater) — who attended the state program this summer. The board also recognized HOSA students who represented the district at the International Leadership Conference in Houston and named individual students who placed in competitions across middle and high schools.
Staff announced a $14,500 donation from Scenic Subaru as part of Subaru Loves Learning and adoptaclassroom.org to support Central Middle School. The presenter said the contribution will benefit more than 625 students by providing teachers up to $500 each through the adoptaclassroom marketplace and additional school supply kits and backpack food support. Principal Matt Scott thanked the donors and said the gift will supply classroom materials, biology kits, music books and backpacks for students in need.
Board chair Mr. Badgett and other members praised community partnerships and the foundation's recent contributions: the Surry County Schools foundation provided over $40,000 to schools in the first half of 2024 plus about $14,600 from restaurant fundraising, which the chair said amounted to roughly $55,000 in local support through July. Board members highlighted the importance of partnerships that connect students to employment and training opportunities and thanked staff for a smooth start to the school year.
