Port Richey — The City Council on Feb. 24 approved joining a Pasco County Unmanned Systems Task Force that will let the city operate commercial‑grade drones under shared waivers and coordinated training.
The police chief explained that the county’s sheriff’s office has already secured Federal Aviation Administration waivers and program waivers that enable operations otherwise restricted for standard operators (for example, night flights and flights over crowds). The city obtained commercial‑grade drones through a grant but needs waivers and training to operate them for public safety missions.
Under the agreement, agencies will be able to share equipment and waivers; the county’s framework includes plans for roughly 43 ‘‘nests’’ across the county to provide rapid first‑responder drone coverage. The chief said the agreement allows the city to train with other agencies, rely on existing waivers, and have staff obtain required licenses; staff will pursue insurance and the necessary training for operators.
Council members praised the regional collaboration and approved the agreement by motion and voice vote. Staff said the agreement reduces legal and operational barriers to deploying drones in emergencies and planned events, and that monthly joint training will be part of the program.
