The Jasper City Council voted to adopt a budget amendment (2023‑2024‑13) that provides funding for a set of capital and operating needs, and took related procurement and travel actions.
City Clerk Kathy Chambliss told council members the amendment had been introduced at the prior meeting and that funds would provide $53,000 for HVAC repairs at the Jasper Civic Center, $10,000 for additional garbage containers, $25,000 for a traffic‑signal design at Viking Drive and 20th Avenue, and $1,000 to support a back‑to‑school backpack program. “We introduced this last time. It was funding that would provide the HVAC unit repairs for the Jasper Civic Center, 53,000, additional garbage containers, 10,000, some improvements, and a traffic signal design for Viking Drive and 20th Avenue, 25,000, and then 1000 dollars to help with the back to school fare for the backpacks,” Chambliss said during the presentation.
Council moved and approved the budget amendment; council members indicated unanimous support by voice vote. Separately, the council authorized staff to solicit bids for crushed stone and approved overnight travel for the city clerk to attend pre‑election informational events related to the 2025 election, with the clerk stating those travel expenses are covered by her budget.
What’s next: staff will proceed with procurement for crushed stone and coordinate the HVAC work and signal design as budgeted. The city clerk said she will begin attending election‑related meetings and will report back to the council on outcomes related to the 2025 election planning.
Vote and procedure: motions for the budget amendment, bid solicitation and the clerk’s travel were moved and seconded during the meeting and carried by voice vote.
