The West Essex Regional School District Board of Education held brief interviews on July 17 with two candidates seeking to fill a Roseland board vacancy and announced it would discuss the applicants in executive session before making an appointment.
Chair (Speaker 4) explained the process: each candidate would give a short biographical overview and answer the same set of questions; the board would then recess to executive session to consider the candidates and return to make an appointment.
Candidate Ruth (Speaker 3) described nearly 19 years in education, currently serving as an assistant principal of a lower school and director of early education in Livingston. She said the role appealed to her because it allowed her to "listen and hear the evidence in front of you" and help balance fiscal responsibility with academic goals.
Dawn Spango (Speaker 9) introduced herself as a Roseland resident with more than two decades of state and local government experience and volunteer leadership, saying she had "22 plus years, state, local, and county government" service and that she wanted to support district goals including the We Care initiatives. Spango emphasized teamwork, collaboration and a commitment to required trainings.
Board members pressed both candidates on priorities the district should strengthen; topics raised during the exchange included social and mental‑health education, social media awareness and student support through guidance and counseling. One candidate noted the need to ensure faculty and guidance staff can identify and support students who may be struggling.
Both candidates said they had reviewed time commitments and training obligations and were prepared to take required ethics and other board training. The chair reiterated that the board would move into executive session to discuss the candidates and that an appointment would be made following that closed deliberation; that appointment does not appear in the excerpted transcript.
