Trenton superintendent announces phone-management pilot, says agendas will be tied to board goals

Superintendent Earl addressed the board on Aug. 11 to preview two operational items for the coming school year: a board-presentation calendar and a new phone-management approach. Earl said district staff are building a presentation schedule so testing, safety reports and quarterly updates appear on calendar dates and "all recommendations coming from my office are connected to goals," which will help the public see how agenda items map to district priorities.Earl also announced plans to pilot the "YonderPouch" process to limit phone use during classroom time. He described the pouch as a small, lockable container that students can keep with their devices; an adult (designated staff such as administrators or climate-and-culture staff) would unlock it at appropriate times so students still have access under supervision. "We're planning to implement the YonderPouch process," Earl said, adding the district intended to post demonstrations and more information on the website by about Aug. 15.A board member asked whether the district monitors screen time on district-issued iPads and raised concerns about handwriting and other classroom skills. Earl replied that the district can monitor device activity, "we know where they go, how much time they go," and that it can restrict or turn off functions if necessary. He emphasized balanced use: the district still intends to preserve print reading and writing initiatives while using devices to increase engagement and access to materials.The superintendent said staff would prepare goal-aligned agenda formats and confirmed a plan to bring draft board goals to the board for review in September; a retreat was discussed for late August to gather member input. No formal policy was adopted during the meeting.
