Superintendent reports net enrollment decline, highlights Shinnecock Heritage Day and Latino Heritage events

Superintendent Doctor Morel presented an enrollment snapshot and community programming updates to the Southampton Union Free School District board, reporting 1,277 students currently enrolled and a net change of minus seven since the first day of school on Sept. 4.
“Between the first day of school on September 4 and today, we lost 7 students,” Doctor Morel said, explaining the district lost 17 students and enrolled 10 new students in that window. The superintendent provided a breakdown: some students transferred to other public schools, one student went to homeschool, four went to private schools and some left the country.
Doctor Morel also highlighted Shinnecock Heritage Day activities across district schools and thanked attendees including Mayor Bill Manger, Shinnecock Nation chairwoman Lisa Gorey and elders from the Shinnecock community. The superintendent credited staff — including Dr. Martinez Fuentes — for organizing classroom read-alouds and student artwork recognizing original inhabitants of the land.
He noted the elementary received a new playground last week and praised staff and community leaders for the effort. The superintendent encouraged attendance at an open mic Latino/Latinx Heritage Month event on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. at the high school.
