Planning commission recommends approval for second dwelling at 9815 Point Road

The Jones County Planning and Zoning Commission voted to recommend approval of a conditional-use request allowing a second dwelling on a parcel smaller than 10 acres at 9815 Point Road.
Applicants Robert and Beverly Ferris told the commission the second dwelling is intended as a small cottage for the applicants' 93-year-old mother. Robert Ferris described the unit as about 1,100 square feet and said adjoining landowners had been contacted and did not object. "I've talked with both of those folks, and they're they're fine with, putting in what I call granny shack," Ferris said; his wife prefers to call it a cottage.
The planning commission had no opposition on the record. A member moved to approve the conditional-use request, a second was given, and the commission voted to forward a positive recommendation to the county commissioners. The chair noted the commissioners will make the final decision on Tuesday, March 3.
The property was described to the commission as roughly 5 acres, zoned rural agricultural. The recommendation sends the item to the county commissioners for final action.
