The Katonah‑Lewisboro Union Free School District Board of Education used its June 6 meeting to honor newly tenured staff, pay tribute to long‑serving retirees and approve the administration’s tenure resolution by unanimous vote.
"It's probably our favorite meeting of the year, when we have an opportunity to welcome our newly tenured teachers and congratulate them on achieving tenure," the board chair said as the meeting opened, framing the night as a celebration of staff service.
Administrators introduced and praised a long list of honorees from across the district. Presentations included remarks about classroom leadership, program development and student supports for staff including Rebecca "Becca" Davidson, Diana Bastille, Paula DeFrancesco, Donna Julie, Candace Lee, Michael Weschler, Erin Davies, Laura Hansen, Ashley Slodinsky, Nancy Early, Anna Loeb, Tyler Sayer and others. Speakers described examples of work ranging from launching maker spaces and developing social‑emotional learning plans to running arts programs and special‑education services.
Following the presentations, the board moved resolution 10.04, granting tenure to the professional staff members who had been recognized. The motion, seconded by Marjorie, was approved by voice vote, 7–0.
The meeting also included tributes to retirees across the district. Speakers highlighted decades of service and personal anecdotes about the impact of departing staff — from long‑time music teachers to facilities crew members and a long‑serving school nurse — and urged the community to celebrate those careers.
During the same meeting the board read proclamations honoring student trustee Shaina Carr for her year of service and trustee Ilana Schneier for her three years on the board; both proclamations were approved by the board. Board members closed business with committee reports and scheduled future meetings before moving to executive session to discuss the hiring of the superintendent.
Key actions and clarifying points: - Resolution 10.04 (granting tenure to the professionals introduced during the recognition portion) was approved by a voice vote of 7–0. - Multiple administrators provided specific examples of each honoree's contributions; those remarks formed the basis of the recognitions but did not change employment terms beyond the tenure grant recorded by resolution 10.04. - The meeting included a consent‑agenda vote (approved 7–0) and a motion to enter executive session regarding superintendent hiring (approved 7–0).
Next steps noted at the meeting included scheduled committee meetings (audit, finance, facilities) and the district's final board meeting of the academic year on June 20.
