Katonah‑Lewisboro board makes KLSD 2030 planning a formal goal; keeps leadership and fiscal stewardship priorities

The Board of Education opened its first meeting after the start of the school year by initiating an initial discussion about its annual goals and how they should relate to a districtwide KLSD 2030 mission and vision planning process.
Chair opened the dialogue and proposed the board keep a fiscal stewardship goal and a leadership goal while adding a third goal to support the superintendent’s entry plan and the development of a KLSD 2030 plan. “I think our fiscal goal…stands the test of time,” the Chair said, and proposed that the board “support the superintendent’s entry plan and goals to create a mission and vision resulting in the KLSD 2030 plan.”
Board members debated whether to retain three specific leadership bullets—engaging learning environment, relevant educational experiences and fostering good citizenship—or to make the 2030 plan a standalone third goal. One member urged keeping the three leadership tenets in place until the 2030 planning process produces concrete language, saying removing them now felt “a little premature.” Another suggested making development of the 2030 plan a distinct, time‑bound goal while preserving leadership language as an enduring board value.
Members and the superintendent agreed on a working timeline: the superintendent and team aim to have a draft of the 2030 plan by January–February, with a midyear status update to the board and further reporting through the year. “I would anticipate that there would be goal alignment from each of those clarified items that come right out of that,” a board member said, describing an iterative process of community engagement and chapter‑by‑chapter reporting.
The board settled on a three‑part approach for the coming year: (1) a leadership goal that retains the district’s learning‑commitment bullets; (2) a fiscal stewardship goal; and (3) a goal to support the superintendent’s onboarding and the development of the KLSD 2030 mission and vision, with a midyear update and further reporting to follow. The Chair said a revised draft reflecting this structure will be returned for the next meeting for review and finalization.
The discussion was procedural and forward‑looking; no formal vote was taken on the goals at this meeting. The board signaled it will review a revised goals draft at the next scheduled meeting and receive status updates as the 2030 plan is developed.
