Parents and teachers urge dedicated SRO at Increase Miller after recent lockdowns

During the public forum, multiple community members urged the board to assign a dedicated school resource officer (SRO) to Increase Miller.

Barbara Assetta introduced herself and said she is the parent of two children at Increase Miller and requested a dedicated SRO, referencing school shootings and arguing for an immediate, on‑site police presence. "We can't be so naive to think that this can't happen to us," she said, and urged the board to "prioritize the highest level of security and preparedness and protection for our children by dedicating this to our school." Assetta recounted national incidents to underscore the urgency of local preparedness.

Amita Singh, who identified herself as a KES parent and educator, thanked teachers and framed diversity, equity and inclusion work as a human, classroom‑level concern—emphasizing the importance of representative texts and inclusive classroom environments.

Lindsay Smith, a parent with two children at Increase Miller, and Caitlin Watkins, a district teacher and parent, both said they had been alarmed by a recent lockdown and noted the district currently has one SRO for five buildings. Smith said a dedicated SRO would provide a faster on‑site response and serve as a visual deterrent; Watkins described the fear teachers feel during lockdown drills and said many parents were panicked that day because they did not know where an SRO would be assigned.

The board closed public comment after these remarks; members did not take immediate action during the meeting but moved on to the consent agenda.
