Three justices were presented and sworn in during the same public ceremony at the Temple of Justice.
State Senator Yasmin Trudeau introduced Stephen Charles Gonzalez, praising his leadership on racial justice and his measured approach. Gonzalez took the constitutional oath and in remarks urged bridging divides and caring for those unlike us.
Kevin Flannery presented Cheryl Naomi Gordon McLeod for a third term; she was sworn in, thanked family and staff, and reflected on the court’s evolving jurisprudence — citing early missteps in the court’s history and later decisions expanding rights under Washington’s constitution. "We have a Washington state constitution, and our state constitution provides greater protection of individual rights and liberties," Justice Gordon McLeod said.
Mark Johnson presented Salvador Alejo Munguia, recounting Munguia’s family history and decades of pro bono work and access-to-justice leadership. Munguia accepted the oath and in his remarks emphasized gratitude to parents and mentors, education as a pathway and continued commitment to community service.
All three were joined on the bench by colleagues and family; the ceremony included recognition of court staff and a public reception following adjournment.
